Domestic violence and relationship breakdown problems are more often brought to the door of Rutland Citizens Advice Bureau at this time of the year, for this reason the bureau is providing even more resources into dealing with this issue.
Citizens Advice can help people resolve their legal, money and other problems that can otherwise break families apart. But for those who are facing a relationship breakdown through domestic violence or any other reason the bureau provides advice on areas such as:
- emergency as well as longer term housing
- income, debt and benefits
- rights regarding access to children
- separation and divorce
- emergency injunctions, through its working partnership RFLA solicitors.
Contact the bureau if you need help.

Rutland CAB and the Active Citizenship Network in Italy are coming to the conclusion of a Europe-wide volunteering project to encourage young people to volunteer and become active citizens. Schools from around Europe have entered a competition and produced YouTube clips on volunteering.
The aim of the project is to highlight the possibilities and benefits of volunteering for young people. From the CAB perspective, participation encourages young people to volunteer within their communities. The participating schools have received sessions on volunteering in general and for the CAB service in particular.
To support the project, view and vote for your favorite entry. The entries can be found through the following link:
From this link you can vote, by clicking ‘like’ on any of the 35 video contest entries: there are 4 UK entries from Oakham, Dulwich and Oundle schools and voting closes on 14 May.

Rutland CAB Financial Literacy project starts on 1 April 2012. It aims to prevent future problems by helping a wide range of the Rutland community to better understand money matters such as budgeting, credit, bank accounts and how to maximise their income. Outcomes from similar work in the past show that people have more confidence and greater ability to deal with their finances and avoid debt if they have specific education in this area.
Rutland CAB will have a dedicated team to go out into the community to deliver the training either in small groups or on a one to one basis. Schools in particular will be offered the free service and the aim is that all young people not going on to university will receive a Financial Literacy course before leaving school.
Individuals will also be able to access a one to one course that will be delivered by appointment through the bureau in Oakham.
If you know of someone who could benefit from this service please contact the bureau.

Imposters claiming to be from the CAB are preying on people with money worries with cold calls offering fake ‘debt help’.
We want to stress that no genuine CAB adviser, or anyone connected with the CAB service, would ever phone or text someone out of the blue.
If you are cold called or get a text that offers you a loan, help dealing with debt problems or claims to be from your bank – it is almost certainly a scam.
Make sure you:
- don’t give or confirm any personal information
- report the call immediately to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.org.uk/report_fraud
- contact the bureau for free, confidential, independent and expert advice to help resolve your problems.
